Factory and warehouse lighting
In factory lighting the target illuminance depends on the precision of the task: about 300 lux for rough assembly, 500 for medium precision, 750 lux for fine work and 100 lux in storage areas. High-flux industrial luminaires are used for high ceilings, with IP65 or higher protection in dusty and damp environments.

From our project: Industrial Production Facility
What to look out for
- Safety at work
- Insufficient light increases the risk of accidents and errors; adequate light is essential around machinery and on escape routes.
- High ceilings
- From 6 metres upwards, high-flux luminaires that concentrate light downwards are needed.
- Ambient conditions
- In areas with dust, humidity or washing, the right IP rating determines lifetime.
- Energy
- Because of long operating hours, efficacy and sensor control are the investments with the fastest payback.
Lighting by facility area
- Production line
- 300–750 lux depending on the task; a layout that reduces machine shadows, 4000K–5000K.
- Quality control
- 750–1000 lux, CRI 90+; uniform, high illuminance so that colour and surface defects can be seen.
- Racked warehouse
- Long, narrow light distribution along the aisles; labels on the upper shelves must be readable.
- Open storage area
- About 100–200 lux; a low level in unused zones via presence sensors.
- Loading dock
- Glare-free light for vehicles and forklifts; IP65 for external docks.
- Technical areas and offices
- Office criteria (500 lux, UGR ≤ 19); IP65 in compressor and boiler rooms.
Choosing luminaires
- High ceilings (6 m and above)
- High-flux industrial luminaires that concentrate light downwards; narrow or medium distribution.
- Medium ceilings (4–6 m)
- Linear industrial luminaires or wide-distribution high-bay models.
- Dusty and damp environments
- IP65 or higher with a closed housing; IP66–IP67 where washing takes place.
- Control
- Sensor dimming under roof lights, scheduling according to shift plans.
- Emergency lighting
- Luminaires with emergency kits for escape routes and around hazardous machinery.
Typical target values
| Area | Target | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Rough assembly | 300 lx | UGR ≤ 25, Ra 80 |
| Medium precision | 500 lx | UGR ≤ 22, Ra 80 |
| Fine work, quality control | 750–1000 lx | UGR ≤ 19, Ra 80 |
| Warehouse, storage | 100 lx | UGR ≤ 25, Ra 60 |
Values are typical targets from the standards; in a project they are determined by calculation for the conditions of the space.
Recommended product groups
Industrial High-Bay Luminaires
3 models
Industrial LED luminaires are designed for factories, warehouses, production lines and workshops with dust, humidity and high ceilings, and have high luminous flux and robust housings..
Linear Luminaires
7 models
A linear luminaire is an LED luminaire with a long, slim body that creates a continuous line of light.
Emergency Lighting
8 models
Emergency lighting switches on automatically when the mains supply fails and lights escape routes and exits.

Frequently asked questions
How many lux should a factory have?
It depends on the precision of the work: about 300 lux for rough assembly, 500 for medium, 750 for fine assembly and 1000 lux for precision work; 100 lux is typical in warehouses.
Which luminaire is used in a high-ceiling warehouse?
High-flux industrial luminaires that concentrate light downwards; in racking aisles, distributions that spread light along the aisle.
What does converting metal halide luminaires to LED achieve?
The same illuminance is usually achieved with much lower power; you can estimate the savings with our LED savings calculator.
Which IP rating does a factory need?
IP20–IP40 may be enough in dry areas; IP65 is recommended in dusty environments and IP66–IP67 where pressure washing is used.
