Office lighting

For desk work in offices, EN 12464-1 sets an average of 500 lux, a glare limit of UGR ≤ 19, uniformity of 0.60 and at least CRI 80. For screen work, low-glare linear or recessed luminaires, a 4000K colour temperature and daylight-linked DALI control are the common solution.

What to look out for

Visual comfort
Bright spots reflected on screens cause eye strain; luminaires with low-glare diffusers are chosen.
Uniform light
No end of the desk should be left dark; uniformity is checked by calculation.
Energy
Daylight and presence sensors reduce consumption considerably.
Meetings and presentations
Scenes (presentation, meeting, cleaning) are recalled with one button via DALI.

Lighting by office area

Open-plan office
500 lux, UGR ≤ 19; pendant or recessed linear lines following the rows of desks, daylight-linked dimming.
Meeting room
500 lux; scenes for presentations, meetings and video calls; balanced light on faces from the front.
Executive office
500 lux in the work area; 3000K accent and dimming in the seating corner.
Reception and lobby
300 lux or more; the brand wall with a wallwasher, the welcome point with accent lighting.
Corridors and stairs
100–150 lux; guiding linear lines, presence sensors and emergency lighting.
Kitchen and break area
3000K, warmer and indirect light; an atmosphere distinct from the work area.

Technical criteria

Glare (UGR)
Below 19 for screen work; micro-prismatic diffusers or deep-set optics.
Uniformity (Uo)
At least 0.60 in the work area; no dark zones between desks.
Colour
4000K and at least CRI 80; CRI 90 for design and colour work.
Flicker
Low-flicker drivers to prevent eye strain during long screen work.
Control
Daylight sensors, presence sensors and scenes via DALI; zone control in open-plan offices.

Frequently asked questions

How many lux should an office have?

An average of 500 lux at desks; 500 lux in meeting rooms and 100 lux in corridors are typical targets.

Which luminaires are suitable for offices?

For screen work, linear, pendant or recessed luminaires with a UGR below 19; in open-plan offices, linear systems joined end to end.

Which colour temperature should an office have?

4000K neutral white in work areas and 3000K in break areas are common choices.

How can office lighting energy be reduced?

High-efficacy luminaires, daylight sensors near windows, presence sensors in meeting rooms and dimming via DALI.
